Overview

There is a piece of land just north of Dubrovnik that looks like a Dalmation Island, long and thin, but in fact it is joined to the mainland by 4-5 kilometers. However, we still had to take a ferry to it.

The ferry goes from Ploce which is 15k along the coast. Again, on time and very efficient, so by mid-morning we were cycling towards Ston.

The next 9k was a climb to almost 400m and the views from this high point were fantastic.

At Pijavicino there is a monument at the highest point referencing the Balkan war, with an amazing view towards the coast at Trstenik.

On the steep descent I reached the fastest speed I have ever achieved on a hired hybrid, and I knew that in two days time we would be seeing this hill again, from a very different perspective.

Drace is another lovely small fishing port to stop for a coffee and watch the sea. Next is a short 200m climb where the views again are spectacular.

Just before you get to Prapratno is a small restaurant on the right. We didn’t have time to stop but I knew we would be drinking coffee there in 2 day’s time.

So, via the famous walls of Ston we descended the final 5k into town, where we picked up the minibus which transported the riders and their bikes into Dubrovnik.
