Overview

The first day in Croatia begins at Split airport with a taxi to the bike hire shop. It is great to begin the first day with a bike ride, rather than waiting until the morning; it feels like you are grabbing an extra, very special day.

Not only are they very good hire bikes, but they even have stickers with our names on each one. After a few minor adjustments we were on our way.

With a quick change of clothes and bags placed into the back-up van, we were cycling down to the port, and ready to catch the ferry from Split to Stari Grad, on the island of Hvar.

The ferry onboarding process was efficient and the journey quick, it wasn’t long before we were heading out to face the first of many hills.

It was warm and sunny, with other islands and flat blue sea either side of us, the views were spectacular.

The first day was just to get used to the bikes and get the legs working. Just 20 kilometres, 10k up and 10k down, and we arrived into Hvar long before dusk.

With quiet roads and a good surface it wasn’t long before we had the hills done and we headed down to Hvar Town, a place I had heard so much about – a great mix of historical buildings, fine restaurants, and later on very interesting night spots.
